Just looking for some reccomendations for a tyre for my astra. With around 220kw at the fronts now, obviously grip in 1st and 2nd(sometimes 3rd and 4th) is 'entertaining' at times. :slap:
have read through most of the the threads here, still not to sure so looking for opinions. top of the list at the moment is a toyo t1r, but i do throw a few trackdays a year into the mix, and am not phased having to buy a set of tyres each year(dunno how long the t1r's last but i would assume longer?). Was thinking r-comps, but then they obviously wont last long on a daily. Can anyone recommend anything better than the T1R's for what i want?
stock tyre is 215/40/17, but looking at 225-235/40/17 or thereabouts. :werd:

which ones? not overly concerned about cost (although if they are gonna wear fast i'd rather not pay more than 3-400 a tyre :P )

my federal ss595's are okay, but fuckin loud hey..
feel pretty positive in the wet, havent had much time in the dry with them.
Wan Li's
I have them on my Fairlane and they are damn quiet, and are grippier than the 10 yr old Bridgestones that were on there previously.
60 bucks a pop, cant go wrong :D

IMO the best street tyre I've used for grip/longevity is the Federal 595SS.
If you're looking for an R-comp, I'd be looking at Potenza RE55's, thats probably what I'll end up buying. Wouldn't be using them on a daily driver though.

Federals are excellent in the wet ... swear by them

Toyo Proxes 4 are good. I'm testing them out at the moment.
Biggest problem with them is the wait to get them.
I'm currently waiting on some 275/35/18's and paying less then $270 per tyre

My experience with federals has been all bad.
Shocking sidewall flex to the point of being dangerous.
I had pirelli dragons and went for the federals because they were cheap and a week later made them take them off and put pirelli dragons back on.
Dragons are grippy as fark in the dry and the wet.
About $300 per corner for 235/45/17s

DOABURNOUT then ricey :p
I use Sumitomo's...work well imo good value for money (around 200 a corner), tried Bridgestones, Falkens, Michelins and Federals.
Best tyre I've had on the ute was Goodyear Eagle F1...but the $$ to how long they lasted was kinda not really good enough haha

i should have probably been a bit more specific, they would have "designed" them to go around corners, but being a drag radial it wouldnt be a high point.
also have to be careful with them as though they are marked DOT approved, it has nothing to do with australia's own transport or tyre guidelines so if your in a prang and the cops check your tires. your could be screwed by your insurance company.
Federal 595 RS
not 595ss, the RS is the R comp compound and is about 15% cheaper than the bridgestone. Reports of good life and excellent grip from customers compared to more expensive r comps. R888, Yoko A048, Bridge Re55 etc.

the RS is also double the price and half the lifetime.
The 595 SS are excellent street tyres. 235/17/40 were $140 last time I checked...

errm i said ET Drag, as in slicks...but now that i've had to explain it...it lost its humour. ahh well. I realise what you've said about Drag radials Dave...that type of stuff is pretty self explanatory :)

only if you pay full retail ;)
and im sure you mean 235 45 17, that would be the cheapest size on the market.

agreed the SS's are pretty good, ran them on the 180sx and now the pulsar.
RS's are even better, but it depends how much you drive the car, 15-20,000km is probably doable out of a set

ok i am a little torn here...
pretty much every shop i have called for pricing is claiming the T1R's are in a different league to the 595ss, and of course the t1r's are about $70 a tyre more expensive (220 vs 290 on avg for 235/40/17).
can you really get 15-20k from the rs? would the t1r's still be better? like i said before 15k from the tyre i get would be ideal...

the T1R would be better than the SS's. thats a given based on the price.
Life expectancy on the rubber who really knows, some cars chew tyres more than others. At least a FWD is relatively light on the rears, so rotating them will increase lifespan.
treadwear ratings on the t1r looks to be 280, compared to 180 on the 595RS.
brief look rates the 595SS at 280 also.
Comparively, something like a yoko a032r/a048r have a rating of 60.
OK
T1R is an awsome street tyre! Wont buy better for money, Ie Yoko v103, Pirelli Rosso. Goodyer F1 etc shits all over federal. But they should for the money.
Expect 20 to 35k out of em depending on your driving, There soft street tyres.
The Federal RS is an excellent entry level R comp. And is Just that an R comp! However i know people have got 25k out of em, on V8 utes doing track days and fridays at the drags.
If you use it as a street car predominantly id recomend the T1R!
if a weekend racer, then Federal or other rcomp

Hankook Ventus RS2
I had a set of these on my MX5 and I competed in a club event most weekends when I had it.
I ran 215/40/R17's and paid $1,000 fitted and balanced all up.

Had Bridgestone Potenza G3's on my 32. Awesome in dry and wet.
come on guys..
Tyre shops have to make money just like everyone else. huge overheads to cover. ring around if you want a good price. Different shops also get hugelly different buying prices depending on how much and how often they order. Just don let em walk all over you ;)
forgot to get a price list. Had a quick look today, and ive only got retail prices which are a bit rediculous for the Fed RS will try and get a better one from federal... any one wanna do a group buy?
