Yep Cast, usually in sand moulds then cleaned up.

I know the guys from street scene had the 4.0L toyota v8 block machined from a solid piece of alloy. Seemed to find the reliable limit of the block at around 1000hp. Fancy piece of gear. Now running around 1400hp no problems.

we had one of those fully automated routers at my last work... cheap old price of ~1.3mil and you can have one and all the licenses for it at home :)

creating the programs for it was exceedingly time consuming for even simple things like plaques and I think one of the more senior guys did a gearbox bellhousing in his lunch breaks over the space of about a year lol.

I wouldnt even like to think how long it took to write the program for a v8 block :S
