i guess ive got a good enough eye haha, cheers. been pretty keen into japanese blades since i was young. read heaps about em, i know the only Japanese blade conissuer recognised by the japanese government outside of japan, have a few chats with him and you pick up a few things lol.

fyi: easiest way to pick a iai-jutsu 440, the 'Seppa' bronze looking bit that secures the hand guard (tsuba) to the handle of the blade (Tsuka) (in a round about way to describe it)...

Seppa's on decorational blades are all the same in design, and they're made by the chinese and spaniards. poor quality, not built for any cutting.

have a look at your blade when you get home, check the bronze bit (seppa). legally, they cannot be sold if they're fractured, yours shouldn't be, but if you've gone and had a hack with it, you might find the Seppa broken...if its broken, bear in mind next time its being swung around... other than the Mekugi (pegs)... the Seppa pretty much holds the whole sword togather.

but yeh, fork out $1200, and you can have a mass produced composite cutting blade that will make forged japanese steel look like aluminium.
Artificial blades are insane now that Paul Chen and Bugei have been making top quality cutting blades internationally now for the last 10 years.
Japanese blades are fkn cool, but they're a collectors piece, i was looking at $4000k in 2002 for a edo period blade (around 1800's), entry level blades are about $50k...

its a worry, but nowadays, you can get on the net and pick up a blade for fukall... it'll cut bone, flesh, tendons, bamboo, pine and hold a relatively decent edge for a few years and take bulk blade on blade contact.
