Hi everyone,

I'm looking at piecing together a decent Sidchrome tool kit. I know, I know...people have told me that Kincrome is just as good, Snap-On is better, etc etc.

I'm not looking for opinions, I'm looking for a decent price....as I always do when looking at a major outlay, I check out 4 different suppliers, and so far from 2 suppliers, I've gotten varying pricing for my bits and pieces, from 1400 at the most expensive, to 900 for the cheapest.

Does anyone know any other places I can compare prices with, or does any1 have any hook-ups?

Cheers :)

Thing is, I have a trade account with a supplier whom I wont mention names, but a few Antilag people work there...the prices are fucking ridiculous i.e. i can walk off the street into any other tool shop, and pay less than my trade price!!

I know I could prob squeeze a better price out of them if I talk to the right people, but how much cheaper will it be? The price difference is SUBSTANTIAL, therefore I believe it still wont beat the other prices I was given.

Personally I feel that Sidchrome tools (the older models) are stronger than Kinchrome tools. I have broken quite a few Kinchrome tools! As for the later models of Sidchrome tools, apparently they were bought out and the quality as a result has suffered since. So it's more a question of how much are you prepared to spend..

If you are serious about your tools and use them ALLOT then Snap-On is your first choice. The only snap-on tool I have ever broken is a 1/4" drive rachette (mind you I was using it for a job load it wasn't designed for). Snap On replaced the rachette with a new one (lifetime warranty). Snap-On ftw, but prepare to be raped $$$!

KingChrome is shit

KC Tools is shit

Snap on The best if you can afford it

Sidchrome / CGL Tools same same - i swaer by them as does anyone else i pushed them onto over the past year or so ... tools are amazing quality and lifetime guarantee like Sidchrome.

Ask Big Cam / Bobbo / Owain / Rrob / Cplagz i got them all cgl tools

Lyndon, I cant justify Snap-On. I dont use my tools to make money, I use them when I need them...therefore, Sidchrome is about as expensive as I'd like to go!

After speaking to a few people, I've found out that Sidchrome quality suffered but has come back up again with their brand new state of the art production facility, so its definitely worth the outlay.

Sweet dude, for home use Sidchrome is definitely a great way to go (infact most of my gear at home is Sidchrome) :)

Also considering CGL at the moment...I've seen some of their stuff myself, and its top notch. In fact, side by side with Sidchrome, some of the stuff is IDENTICAL with different logos stamped on them!!

Again, i dont use my tools for money...just for working on teh ballsack at home, and friends/familys cars...CGL might be the go, and lifetime warranty cant go wrong either!

Check your email Ben ;)

Joe,

send me a PM if your after some prices, I would not reccommend buying a kit/set if your only going to use metric only, you will notice that the smaller kits give you the smaller spanner sets, socket sets etc which won't have decent size range.

I can get hold of Sidchrome, Snap-on, Stahlwille, Kincrome, Stanley, ABW, KC, Koken & Teng.

ABW - Poo
KC - Poo
Koken - For sockets only ... Not bad as is Geodor'
Kincrome - Poo ( brother of KC tools i think ... was two brothers owned same business then split up to make KC Tools and Kincrome ... KC is the lesser of the two )

Sidchrome - CGL same same like i said

Snap on Bombed ... i found original Snap on Catalouge from 1982 ... good nick too its thick as about 200-300 pages soo funny in the pics ... massive " computers "

I would say Gedore is better than Koken, Gedore uses the same Din castings Stahlwille use.

IMO even some of the Sidchrome stuff is pretty crap

All my sockets and rings are sydchrome.. some are 40 years old others are only 2 or three years old, all excellent quality, never broken one. Changed and built motors, use them at work for wheel allignments and suspension.

however i look after my tools well, dont put extender bars ot double up rings for tight nuts. just use the right tool :D

i agree!!

im using my dads old tools some of which are passed down from his dad, and spanners/rachets get frequently lengthened by long tubes - thats the backyard mechanic way..look for made in england and u cant go wrong.

start raiding cashies cause they dont make tools like they used to!!

Taken from JustTools website...
"PLEASE NOTE Australia Post will not deliver this item due to maximum box size restrictions & weight. When you process your order on our website, freight charges will show $5.00 on your freight total. Just Tools will email you the exact freight costings of this item (varies depending on delivery address) & we will not process any orders until the customer has replied with a 'confimation to go ahead' email."

So thats $895.00 plus freight. On their freight charges page a 20kg package is listed as $38 interstate. So in the end wont end up much cheaper anyways.

only small variances in alot of this shit

Snap-on is an absolute waste of money, just for wank factor. I'm a mechanic and hence use my tools everyday, use heaps of diff brands (Sidchrome, SP, CGL, Gearwrench etc). Hell i've still got my very 1st set of Repco spanners that have lasted me over 7 years of abuse and still in good nick. My Gearwrench ratchet spanners have lasted 5 years, and get the most use, way cheaper than a snap-on set. Workmate went through 3 snap-on air ratchets within a year, my 1st SP ratchet lasted me 5 years, even when it let go it was only minor repair - upgraded only due to a smaller model being released.

Pretty much anythings thats not cheap asian crap will cut it (eg most U.S. stuff). Tools only break through misuse/abuse - as they say, a good tradie doesn't blame his tools :P

31-05-2007, 06:11 PM
Like a few people have mentioned the Sidchrome ratchets arent so flash, they look cheap and feel cheap and break all the time, the previous model 1/4" ratchet was having so many problems that for every warranty return, Sidchrome were giving 2x new ratchets back to the customer.

When i first started my job i had all Sidchrome and just replaced the ratchets with Snap-On, that worked well for me for a year or so, now i have pretty much everything Snap-On.

I got this set for my apprenticeship and I must say, it is a decent set and I haven't broken anything yet, and I work on Holdens all day. Life time warranty etc. I give them a thumbs up, can't say I have had any probs with any of the kit yet.

quick edit

They didn't send me my point nosed pliers and I was missing one of my screw drivers from the set upon delivery. Rang them up, they apologised, sent me the bits I was missing, some stickers, and a seat cover ( so ftw bascially )

Teng tools ftw !!
I got bought a set of Teng tools in the UK when I was 16 and they are still going strong ... they also have a lifetime guarantee like Snap On.
Just my 2 cents

I would go sidchrome for sure. But a lot of my box is comprised of CGL, and like Ben said, Cant go past the quality and they have a lifetime warrenty.

I have various things of snap on, but they are just the essentials that the other companies dont make good ones of. (electric screwdrivers, 100w butane soldering iron ect ect)

CGL kit with a CGL box FTW

Joe

Looks to be the way I'm leaning at the moment (CGL).

i didnt bother buyin a full set only a 12mm and a 10mm as these were the 2 i use the most.
Also found a full set of stumpy/short spanners come in very handy when workin in engine bays

narr go a full set, everyones diferent...i use 14 and 17 the most..they are handy so those bastard suspension bolts that feel loose but you cant pull them out with just your fingers.

saying that, japanese tools arent bad either, AGV etc

snap on ratchets are the best ones, i dont know, they seem to have more teeth in the ratchet, very little play

got a tops blue point kit the other day, 3/8" socket set, from 8 to 24mm in long And short sockets, about 20 male and female torx sockets, plus a ratchet (not the best, but ive got other to use) a series of extensions (not the fucking awesome wiggle snap on ones) and a 3/8" to 1/2" adaptor for $270 bucks...i thought it was pretty good, considering itsjust the cheap form of snap on
