Hi Guys,

I just received a phone call from Westpac Fraud Department - someone has got my credit card details and charged $2000 to it today. One of the fraud managers said there has been quite a few cases of the same thing in Perth at the present time.

Precautionary action includes keeping a close eye on your card when using it in cafes, food stores, petrol stations and of course internet shopping.

I'd suggest to be just a little more careful ..

If you ever get carbon copies done on your CC, for instance if their credit line is down. Make sure you get them to rip up the actual carbon receipt and not just bin it.

I had someone use my debit mastercard in perth to pay speeding fine \ tab bets \ and to convert money to pounds.

Took bout 3 weeks to get it all back and as long as you still have your card with you, should definately be safe. I still cant work out how they got my details as i never give it to anyone always have it infront of me.

Hidden mini cameras or even card scanners mounted on card scanners can easily record your credit card number.

I heard from lady at commonwealth bank that their cards will soon have smart chips in them like the new smartrider transperth ones, so you dont have to hand over your card at all for swiping etc, can just pass it above the sensor etc.

Though makes you wonder how hard it would be to create a sensor thingo to just pick up all this information!

Westpac will be rolling out new cards with smart chips in them so thay can be traced easier and more funds can be returned faster if fraudulent. Most banks are moving that way to align themselves with worldwide banking, as a lot of overseas conties already have the chip technology. Means though if you buy stuff online, your card may be stopped due to unusual spending, or if the company you're buying stuff from is based in an "odd" country.
