Well the clutch in my Evo has finally died as expected.

I am going to have a crack at removing the gearbox myself this weekend, I have removed a few Nissan boxes in the past and am quite mechanically minded however I have never worked on an awd Mitsubishi! Anyhow, if anyone here has personally removed an Evo 6 gearbox - any tips or advice from you would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers :)

possibly the most difficult box removal.
expect to lose lots of skin off your fingers

what's worse is once its off you need to get it back on.

Well dudes... The box is out.. woo what a relief! :)

Definitely lost some skin on my hands haha, I would say getting the transfer case off was probably what pissed me off the most, that was until I realised I had to tap out those bastard output shafts. Other than that relatively smooth sailing. Quite a fair bit needs to be removed to get the box out, so it is a little bit of a time consuming job. None the less as expected my clutch was absolutely shagged - hopefully I can have it rebuilt (ATS Carbon Twin Plate). The throwout bearing was actually cracked!!

Anyhow, looking forward to having the clutch rebuilt and putting it all back together now.. *ughh!* :)

I haven't got any scales handy mate, but I found the gearbox (without the transfer case attached) is to heavy to lift down by myself so I used a hydraulic jack under it to lower it down slowly and will reinstall it the same way along with the assistance of a mate to help align her.

imo getting it all back on is twice as hard as getting it off aligning the transfer and box is a pain in the ass.

Ok an update, I am having a good dose of issues locating a rebuild kit for my ATS carbon twinplate. Of recent ATS have changed their name to Carbonetics and do not have an Australian supplier. I have contacted Greenline, Nengun, Jim Berry, Autoclutch, MRT and various other performance clutch centres across Australia. Still waiting on a couple replies.. fingers crossed.

Anyhow, I have considered other options such as refitting a standard autoclutch spec rebuilt single clutch and evo 6 flywheel or even buying a new ORC single plate clutch, only to realise that my gearbox has been setup to a push type clutch so my choices are rather limited. Not real keen to go back to pull type. I hear EVO 2,3 and 4 are push type though... hrmm!

Anyways, that's me for now

Ok bit of an update, for those that are considering installing an EVO 6 gearbox by themselves in their driveway... I don't recommend it! haha :)

What an absolute bastard of a job!! Anyhow, I ended up getting hold of a rebuild kit for the ATS twin plate (new carbon fibre clutch discs and pressure plates, along with a freshly machined flywheel), so clutch is in, gearbox installed (I used a hydraulic jack to bring it up), transfer case installed (this was probably the worst part to refit due to the awkward weight distribution and is a bitch to line up), passenger driveshaft fitted.. and the rest to be finished over the weekend! :)
