After years of wanting to learn I bought myself a guitar today and was wondering if anyone in here has any advice. Finding it hard to get my fingers to bend to do some chords hahaha practice makes perfect I guess...
Cheers.

^^
get a starter book for they give you heads up.
Learn all major and minor chords. Master the powerchord as it will assist you in playing nearly 80% of all rock. Also practice practice practice arpeggios and scales major minor and relative major/minors. NOt promo' as a good habit but learn to develop your ear listening to music to develop what is called 'perfect pitch' (where you can listen to a song and then preety much identify the way it goes) will take years but a skill worth your learning

i've been playing for 15/16 years now, did it for TEE at school too... can't remember when i started. once you've got the basics sorted out its probalby best to firgure out if you learn best from reading music/tabs or if you learn better from ear/by watching other people.
if you're having trouble getting your fingers to do the right thing make sure you've got your hand sitting the right way and sometimes more importantly your elbow not being on some retarded angle, that does make a difference
what sort of guitar did you get? electric, accoustic, classical blah blah blah. can give you more pointers that way.

I played guitar for about 6 years but havent played in ages. Can play Electric mainly but also a bit of accoustic finger picking can also play a few tunes on the banjo :)
Completly taught myself but all i learned to play was powerchords, once u get them nailed as sum1 said above u can play most popular music and rock.
Learnin to read tabs is piece of piss and u can pretty much find any music u want in tab form sumwhere on the net.

Has a built in tuner which is good coz I have no idea how to tune..
Been practising the chromatic scale and trying to memorise G C and D major chords. Once I get them sussed Ill move on hehe
Ben we could make beautiful music together, then play the guitars haha

if u just want to play guitar to b able to smash out a few tunes and mess about just search the net for Tabs ie: Metallica Tabs they r pretty straight forward it says what fret u press on what string cant go wrong. Then its just a case of memorizing when to press what frets

stretching exercises with your fingers. stretch them as far as you can on the fret board. I had that problem too but can now reach further than before.
Then yeah, beginners book and learn scales and basic chords. Then look up songs that are easy to play (theres a ton of websites for it) and even if you hate that song, its still worth playing.
My brother has been playing for 2 and a half years and is now at the same level as a 5th year player. He can rip long long solo's without even thinking about it.

My teacher hated tabs and crossed them out in my books. Said that learning the notes itself were much better because there are many positions you can play one song etc etc. If your the occasional player tabs is fine. If your going for exams or junk, youll have to learn the notes.
When I was playing, I was told to say the notes out as I played them. You pick up everything alot quicker I reckon, and tune by ear and other chick pulling stuff.
start with easy songs.. may i recomend clasical gas

on the music vs tabs things, depends on what you're trying to do. if you know the song, and how it goes then tabs can be good. however if it's something completely new that you've not heard before music is much better because it gives you a more definate measure of time and lets you figure out the best way to play it to suit you. i didn't even look at tabs until i'd been playing for a good 6 or so years, just didn't see the point. only really bothered with it because thats what the majority of music on the net is.
like beams said, you can hit the same note in as many as 5 different places on a guitar so yeah, tabs aren't always all that great.
something to remember wiht chords, there's only so many shapes that you need to remember, that same shape just moves up and down the neck. you might have spotted that by now.
there's no real right or wrong way to learn the guitar. i did bugger all theory until i'd already been playing for a good 8 years even though i was doing all the exams and what not. i just learnt to play what was on the page on what was coming out of the speakers. so yeah, find what works for you a do it.

i reckon if ur serious and u wanna learn music then yeh learnin chords and all that aspect of playin is teh way to go.
But if u just wanna pick up a guitar and smash out some tunes impress some chix then tabs r what yah want :)

tabs, can teach yourself through online tabs/youtube some of the popular songs...usually tutorials if you find it easier to watch rather than read.
No point learning to read music unless your really taking it seriously imo.

Ricey - I bought one a couple of months ago cos I've always wanted to learn. The dude I bought it from gave me a DVD called "Guitar Power" by a mob called SX which features the "Rock House Method" (??).
It's basically a video tutorial. I've watched the first few lessons, which cover the basics like how to hold the guitar properly, the different parts of the guitar, tuning, strumming and then shows you a few of the major chords you should know.
Can burn you a copy if you want, or you caon just go pick up a copy for $20. I got it from Just Music on Stirling Hwy.
I've learnt how to play the first part of the intro to Nothing Else Matters... not much of an accomplishment though cos its pretty damned easy haha!

classical gas is a LEGENDARY SONG.
Shall start a new thread about forming a band for antilag. Since the boys like extra curricular activities.....
I play guitar and drums (self taught) and classicaly trained pianist. Reckon we could get a good group together do some covers and maybe get down some original stuff as well???

POWERTABS are your friend.
http://www.power-tab.net/ (http://www.power-tab.net/) <== application and www.powertabs.net (http://www.powertabs.net) <== the downloadable searchable tabs .... Not only are they in tablature, but you get the rhythm a metronome and timing all pat as well. And if your really keen you can learn to read music. imho the only way to learn.

http://www.911tabs.com/ thats a good place to find tabs. directs you to most of the other tab places so its really about 20 tab sites in one. a lot of them are having legal trouble at the moment though. same principle as downloading music, its allegedly stealing
