FW: Infinity Tower, Dubai Marina - The things that can go wrong on a
building site (or: don't take high paying jobs in the Middle East?)



The incident happened as the workers were assisting the project owners
and the piling contractor with the foundation works on site 20 meters
below Ground level.

The supervision team noticed a slight movement and cracks in the
diaphragm wall adjacent to the Dubai Marina and alerted the management
who ordered an immediate evacuation of the site.

The diaphragm wall collapsed and crumbled within 2 minutes from being
noticed as the workers were scrambling over safety ladders upto the
ground level. The whole site was totally flooded within 4 minutes.

With that comes strict saftey rules as so much construction in such a tight spot can end in tears...

That place has nothing on india re construction mishaps. it was an unfortunate sequence of events that lead to that.

Having said that more people get killed in arab drifto then in the dubai/middle east construction industry!

Man that doesnt suprise me at all hey all I saw while I was in Dubai airport at Passport control was little Pakistanis coming through obviously for work on the building sites! and TJ I think it was more then 10% of the worlds cranes you should see the place fucken cranes everywhere!!!! its unbelievable.

yeah i visited beetle boy last yr some time, i think its more like 30% cranage, but the thing is theyre all moving constantly building. like china but waay more condensed. 24hrs a day work.

city being built at break neck speed by slave labour indians. doesnt surprise me that shit like this happens.

and yes thats at the marina - it happened about 3 weeks back...construction here is SHOCKING - labourers work 3 x 8 hours shifts (24 hours per day) and arent skilled. the masterplanners are white but the workers are indians/paks/bangladeshi...thats what happens...

esp when ur trying to build a city in like 10 years.

Dubailand is nuts man, but those powerpoint presentations are ALL wrong. the thing is the masterplanners change schematics on a daily basis, im not kidding.

The nature of my job allows me to be privy to a LOT of sensitive information on the construction front and i know about all the major developments from meeting the guys first hand - its amazing but so badly planned.

Dubailand is 10 x 30km - thats 300km sq. think about that. It is broken up into different zones, domes - it will have schools, hotels, apartments - mountains, pyramids, dinosaurs (u think im joking right? im not) its bigger than Dubai city itself. Itll have different communities like the Sports City, Technology Park etc etc...its all pretty gangsta. then u have Falcon City, City of Arabia...this city is going to be CRANKING when its all done in 2020

That development, Palm Jebel Ali, The World and Dubai Waterfront are the major areas going on now. On top of that all the residential areas are coming up, too quickly i might add, but not quick enough for affordable housing. Places on the palm are around 6-7 million USD for a nice place....

now im in Events and Business Development for the largest provider of private schools in the world. i was in marketing before but ive just been promoted

basically, i travel and set up big exhibitions, forums - hire promo girls and run events. then meet with ppl and set up schools across the world - also ME markets like Dubai, Jordan, Bahrain - deals with the palm, waterfront, etc etc

its pretty exciting stuff to be honest. and u get to deal with a much broader and international audience than perth - perth is mainly interstate at best...im travelling quite a bit for work and its pretty awesome hey.

plus pay is good, no tax etc etc
