Andy - The car was all over the shop on rego, was registered as a 3 seater, had 4 seatbelts. Had to get it cleared that it wasnt dodgey. Nothing really lined up on the papers. Nothing was on file.

Damn, there was more than ive researched.... oh well :)

UPDATE:

Basically, i decided the car was too slow. So i saved some cash and decided on a ground up rebuild.

Engine wise, im looking at around 500hp at the engine at this stage, 380whp is possible on a stock head, and 26psi. So im going to go a bit further, and add cams, valvesprings, and 30 pound of boost to see what she makes. And this is whats going in it ..... Its a long and drawn out process, with a lot of "If im doing that, why dont i do this at the same time"

As per usual me style, everything bar the expert stuff i do myself. Built not bought representa!

BP Single cam EFI block with 'closed deck'
40 Thou bore out and hone
O-ringing
Wiseco forged -4cc pistons
Belfab PRO H beam forged con rods
Lightened, Ground crank
PAR custom 4kg moly flywheel
BP05 Twin cam head (has no restrictions like the turbo head)
Extensive porting, and polishing with my home made jiggy jig.
Custom 272 intake, and 288 degree 10mm lift Tighe engineering camshafts
Uprated performance valvesprings
HKS 3037 gtpro
Stainless tuned length manifold
HKS 3 inch staino Dump
Metal head gasket
Stock lift pump feeding surge tank with 044 external hanging off it
Gates Racing timing belt.....
(Im sure theres more, i just forget at times)

We all know the bad points of these cars/ the laser tx3's (same drivetrain) is the gearbox. So i undertook a complete driveline converson from a st185 celica gt4. I bought adaptor plates from sweeden and am outsourcing the real fiddely jobs to a engineer so they can be done right (diff mounts, custom propshaft mounts).

Along with my ground up rebuild, i have serverley lightened the car. I am trying to make some wild power to weight ratio's. I have stripped 90kg out of the car so far (i put everything on scales and weighed it)... including air con gear, trims, seats, bottom half of dash, ally suspension vs steel stock ect ect. This brings the weight of the car down to 1050kg (if you go off mazdas 1160 from factory) Proof is in the pudding but its looking good on paper.

Sorry for long post, ive been meaning to update the thread for ages.

Some pics of parts/progress

awesome cant wait to see it go!
i doubt you will get to 1050kg tho. 1100 or so will be closer, either way it will hammer!!
i had a 86 BFMR GTX stripped, no heater or a/c, little interior, 1/3 tank fuel & no spare/tools etc.
i got 1100kg exactly on a couple of weighbridges.
good luck.

the silly-car gearbox should be heaps stronger than the mazduh one, and the lightening will make it wheels spiin easier, so should be tops. besides, st185 gearboxes not as rare as BG ones...

seeing this kind of makes me wish i kept by BF :(

josh, put the gtr front end on the gtx ;)

skids

joshg123
17-09-2007, 10:43 PM
Skids a plenty will be taking place.

Main reasons for converting to celica drivetrain, availibility (my box's are rare as hens teeth for a decent one), off the shelf parts as i intend to run close ratios when its up and running. And it is stronger than the familia one.

I was in sydney this weekend, picked up a few ideas regarding intake systems.... had a look at some of the wrc setups....

Thanks for the comments

seems like a great build, 500hp at the engine will make a bloody weapon.

That gt-four box will be fine if its in good nick, plenty of gt-four guys are running 10second passes with those box's and a few have 500awhp on the stock box, they're nothing like subbie boxes.

If all else fails, i have a spare box in that garage haha

SilentKilla

short ratio box with a big turbo, ORLY?

joshg123
14-10-2007, 06:33 PM
This is a TEMPORARY install of the box, yes i know the washers are hideous. But bunnings is shitehouse for any bolts. Ill go to rudds on monday and get correct lengths.

Note, top of the starter motor surround is cut out to make way for a mazda 17mm bolt, and the top of the toyota transfer is ground down so there is enough room to get a sump (modified) on.

The car goes to the engineer on tuesday to get the engine, diff and top gearbox mount made.

While its there, i am final building the motor. Had a few setbacks with the cams not being machined right and my valvesprings took a bit longer than expected to get here. So yeh, but all good other than that.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/joshg123/13102007003.jpg

Like i said, temporary. I bought another motor to use the block to do the dummy up work so i can still build my good block while im farting around with this.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/joshg123/14102007002.jpg

Shes tight, but she fits, all allignd with the propshaft pointing towards the diff, and the engine on its proper lean. Im very happy with the progress concidering this is the 1st one in australia being done, so its a bit of a wing it job. Cant wait to see the finish product and whip some farking heli's

Also bought SARD 850cc injectors
and am currently saving for a brand new autronic sm4 with loom (if anyone has hookups pwease let me know)

joshg123

Little bit of an update.

I have put the motor together in my garage, all things work well.

My cams were a bit of a prick to get in, cos i got them in stock BC they are alot bigger than factory, i had to carefully grind out the HLA housings to get them to fit in.

However, the valves clear the pistons and she is nice and easy to turn over. All ring gaps ect ect were re-measured prior to putting her together (would be a waste not to even though the machine shop measured them).

Got a few pics of her going together,

Cars getting re-painted again, ive learned from my mistakes last time. This time is solid flake.

Bought some big brakes

Bought a 6 point roll cage

Currently investing in Ground control coilovers with kyb adjustable shocks

Gearbox is in and mounts are made.

Just gotta paint + put everything back together, and get her running!

Heres pics

Cheers dude, yeah im gonna keep it at this stage. And grab a 63 rear for it. The 87 thats on it wont hit full boost till 5k, giving me 3k of usable revs (redlines at 8)

Blake, D2 8 pots, and before the flames arise, a) its the only thing i could get, and b)Ive not seen a bad review yet! ...... But im changing every nut and bolt in that kit to high tensile good quality.

.63 rear housing is a smart move, will still flow very good up top, but spool earlier.

I did some research on the D2/G4's, some good reports floating around, as you have worked out the main issue seems to be with the fittings.

p.s. motor looks the goods

Spot on Blake, even if they give me some troubles, i can get my engineer/fabricator to machine me new brackets out of billet steel, the disc is 100% interchangable with AP, and the caliper, well ive not ever heard of any problems with the caliper itself. But yeah, its a bit of a game move to go brand name with everything on the car and then go d2 on the brakes, but there are some fairly quick cars in the UK using them (gtr's) and In the middle east there are a few cars who have had 0 problems with any part of the kit. Also part the reason is no one does an upgrade kit for the car, not one person, so its either custom made or this. Ill choose something thats been used before.

Also, the cage is a Cusco 6 point bolt in from a Jap tarmac car.

Still hoping to pull the 400atw, everything in the engine is there to do it, the matter is how much ill lose in the drivetrain.

The car will primarily be seing track work, hillclimbs, speed events and the like. But ill try to keep it registered for as long as i can.

400hp + 1080kg car + 4wd = Gonna be fun

mc68
09-12-2007, 05:11 PM
it wont be too laggy for hillclimbs and such?

interested to know what cams you have there, also did you sort out the slight dilemma of the hydraulic lifters? running solid ones now i guess?

joshg123
09-12-2007, 05:44 PM
A 63 rear on a HKS 3037 will hit full boost (30psi) at about 4.2krpm, yes its a tad laggy but the way i drive is high in the rev range anyway, and autronic has antilag so yeah. But hey, i could be proven wrong :P..

Ive kept with hydraulic lifters, this is why i got the cams at stock base circle (rather than go for the smaller diameter and HAVE to run solid) the lifters dont push down too far and they are well within the rev range reccomended for hyd lifters if i set cut at 8.2krpm.

The cams i got made to suit the TODA stage 3 for the 1.8mx5. 272 exhuast and 288 intake... The motor is now an interferance motor, but as long as i dont snap a timing belt hopefully we wont see the outcome of that.

:)

Havent updated the thread in ages.

Turbo has changed to a HKS3037 Gtpro with custom Garrett twin scroll rear housing, twin scroll manifold to suit (pictured mani is my old one).

Autronic sm4 goes in tomorrow, hopefully see some life out of her.

I reckon she will make 400, owains laser made 260 with a smaller setup, at 15psi, a bpt can do 25psi unmodified without pinging. And ive cleaned up any sharp edges in my head to try and avoid pinging.

Lets hope sean can get it there :P, still gotta finalise rear diff, tailshaft and then it will drive.

Clutch combo (thanks to ross's autoclutch),

Custom sized xtreem disc (mazda OD with a toyo spline)
heavy duty extreme pressure plate, with another 40%thrown on it for good measure.
Custom chro-moly PAR engineering flywheel.

Cheers to all that have given advice and support along the way. Ill continue to update as i go

Its in, and now its time to get the thing doing skids.

Update - Progress has been slow, kind of losing interest in this. However ive crossed one of the bigger tasks of the project - The rear diff.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/joshg123/07042008001.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/joshg123/07042008002.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/joshg123/07042008003.jpg

Obviously the subframe is upside down, but however, how a Toyota rear LSD sits in the mazda subframe and the shafts bolt to the diff via machined 25mm spacers. This allows the cv's not to be on full stretch. This is all up in the car now.

I wired the autronic in, all works correctly and it started (sort of). Im having dramas with the tps so im waiting on my custom intake manifold with a commodore style tps in it so i can hook it up correctly. She doesnt idle at all and wont rev. (however help is on the way for that :))

Ill be speaking to final drive and browns or lf this week to organise towing it there for custom propshaft and then organising custom radiator. After that its pretty much done, gotta pull the motor out again to redesign the sump mod, and fit some other trinkets (billet engine mounts).....

Setting out the groups of wiring for various areas (ive since changed to intelligent LS1 coils rather than HEC175)

Starting to lose interest.

Little bit of an update,

Radiators in, oil coolers in and mounted.

Twin scroll manifold is made and in, just got to put some gate lines and gates on it.

Bought a seat

Next tasks - Intercooler and intake manifold and lines.... turbo lines and a dump.....

Put driveshafts and propshaft in...

Re-do the autronic wiring, get it started and then concentrate on getting the interioir set up, and run it on stands and check for leaks.....

great to see my old car coming along very nicely.
i notice it looks like you have 90deg bends straight after your oil cooller take off block, you should try to avoid 90deg bends whenever you can in oil cooler lines. not sure how the ports look in the block but if you can port them or make them smoother its allways a good idea.
good luck with it

One of the bigger achievements of the project, re did the Autronic myself with 4
denso ls1 v8 coils, the sard 850cc's and incorporated the hole where the radio used to be to house the main fuel pump relays, antilag, hi-lo boost and one other aux pin yet to be designated (id prob say it will end up being 2 fans on the oil coolers)

Twin scroll turbo - You basically have 2 exhuast housings, and one compressor.

You need to gate both, or your not going to be able to control boost

Twin gates helps control boost, but a properly built split pulsed manifold will be able to control boost with one gate.

Either way, top effort on the build!

joshg123
16-09-2008, 08:01 AM
Oh yeah i dont mean physically 2 gates, i mean you need to somehow bleed gas from both sides of the manifold. I could use one gate but split its runner, however with the radiator there i dont have the room to go out the front of the collector to do so. Hence the two gates.

Bought the complete nolathane catalouge for it
also bought Whiteline rear strut brace
and Whiteline Adjustable rear sway bar

Not really,

Id like to get a run in tune done before chrissy so i can put some km's on it and diagnose faults over the time off work. But thats all depending on if it starts ok in a couple of weeks.

My goal is to get it ready for a full set of speed series next season.

Yeh may be a weapon, but the weight bias is going to be all wrong, it only has a rear diff and rear body holding the rear end down. Id say its going to be a handfull more than a weapon

joshg123
17-12-2008, 06:43 PM
^ I lol at my own talk. Who was i thinking it would be done before Christmas.

Mounted cage in car, completed rear suspension (swaybar almost hits rear diff),
mounted rear strut brace, made and mounted seat brackets, stripped out old handbrake, stripped factory pedals, mounted propshaft, stripped out front hubs and hit a massive wheel bearing design failure, pressed and fitted nolathane bushes throughout, stripped out old brake lines.

Over time off next week, fabricating intake manfold, mounting cooler, fabricating radiator hoses, fabbing intercooler piping, fabbing air deflector panel, and trying to complete wiring and thermofans.

Postman and repco delivered pwr cooler, edt racing fuel rail and a 90mm ID throttle body

Then, hubs, brakes on, pedals and brake lines and we are done

Really busting my ass to get this finished for the first couple of rounds of AL street series, running outta cash tho. Was gonna throw in the towel a while back, but that would just be a waste wouldnt it

Got 2 weeks off (this and next), so this week ive been concentrating on everything mechanical, and next week everything electrical with the intention of priming oil gallerys and starting it next weekend if everything goes semi to plan, then all i have to do is make an accellerator pedal, harnesses, brake lines and get it tuned.... oh and sunroof, that had to go so the cage could go in.

Made the cooler piping, really wanted to get this right, and neat. So rather than use shitty long radius untidy mandrel bends, i did the jap lobster bend look to get around some tighter bends to keep the piping tight, concise and neat. Another advantage is that i get to use the tig welder which is something i enjoy. Was rather chuffed with the outcome, the inside of the pipe is actually really smooth and there are no jagged edges, much to the dissapointment of the lobster critics.

Changed all the gate lines to -3 teflon braid, sean at ASG supplied me a MAC valve as suggested earlier on this page.

Welded -8 fittings to the rocker cover so i could run braid breathers

CNC'd a new brake pedal as wilwood one was way to big

Pressed the new gtr hubs together without their dust covers with new mazda bearings.

A set of speedylite 7's were purchased in the new gtr stud pattern and then powedercoated black. These are wearing some cheap rubber for run in untill bank account recovers for the 4 nexens and event entry fee for street series.

Got a optima yellow top battery in the boot

Welded up a top radiator hose, made an intake pipe

Just waiting on the intake manifold to come back from my mates workshop where it is being ally welded. That will give me a bit more to do.

Still planning on running the d2 brakes for the first few rounds, id honestly like to see how they hold up reliability wise as they have a stigma around their name, but ive not read more than one bad review (the bolts are super tight with better washers). No doubt they will be upgraded to alcons or AP when the bank account recovers, and it comes off the road for one reason or another.

Will update again in a week or so when i have more done,

Cheers

Josh

Today... Finished plumbing up all the speedflow, finished cooler pipes, Hooked up battery, had a dead short that we promptly sorted, cranked and achieved good oil pressure. Turned autronic on and put 20l of fuel in it. Primed fuel pumps and surge tank, rail and reg. Checked for leaks.

Its sitting out there with its optima on charge ready for me to punch in some numbers tomorrow and get it to idle.

Havent updated for a while,

Had proflex modified by rod at wa suspensions to suit lower ride hight of a track car. Got them serviced while i was at it.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/joshg123/05202009254.jpg

bought a steering wheel

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/joshg123/05202009256.jpg

Then this weekend

Well, after approx 100h of work combined with myself, stewyb, owain, and random phil. big ups to these guys for helping/doing it for me

Seat is mounted, handbrake mounted and lines ran, firewall modified to accept triple master cylinder girling pedal box with balance bar( BIG FUCKING JOB), strut brace had brackets welded to take external shockie cannisters, i tigged up a dump pipe, screamer pipes, clutch line, accellerator cable modd'd, rear proflex fitted, rear hubs modified to accept BG gtx 22v front brakes on the rear, all brake lines ran, bov mounted, new tie rod ends and prob more that i cant remember.

Was a fair effort, got a few teething issues, couple of flares on brake lines arent the best. will redo those. and had a short under my elec control panel. Other than that everything works the way it should. ill fix the elec gremlins and try to start her up during this/next week.

Pics dont really do it justice for what got completed.

And, with a big thanks to Rob Turner. It runs!

Found alot of errors on my part, overall not too bad i think.

Still have a massive vacuum leak to solve, thinking manifold isnt sealing on head correctly. As a result we have a 2300rpm idle.

Can hear it get its proper cammy idle at 1:58 or so where keith gets the spray in the right spot.

Fixed vacuum leak, drove it down the street slowly as no brakes. Celica box engages all gears with no major issues. Have a small scrape in the back and the wheel allignment is all cockeyed but drives fairly smooth

Redid leaking bottom rad hose, holds a solid 80c with the fan on it.

Having some issues getting a stable idle. Because the throttle body is so big. One turn of the backstop screw is about 500rpm. And if you bang off the throttle fast, it will idle lower than when you let off slowly. Its soo close to being shut its not funny.

Getting closer to track night!

id be surprised if your rally car has actual fuel line fittings in the cabin, well ones that are exposed to the inside. fuel lines are fine inside the car, but all pumps and fittings have to be firewalled or boxed in with the current cams rules...

Did you fit a restrictor in the oil line for the turbs? Hks usually run a 0.5mm restrictor but 1.0mm should be good.

joshg123
08-06-2009, 10:04 PM

But dont take my word for it. I suggest you call cams or talk to a scrutineer next time you see one :)

Redid drivers side cv boots as i split them getting it in, put some fresh fuel in it, and put it on the tow truck and got a wheel allignment done.

We set it up for -3 camber on front, -1.5 camber on rear, -1mm toe all round. Will see how much it rolls in the front for the -3 to come into effect. All in testing now.

Took it up and down midlands streets, set the fuel pressure and she actually drives nice now haha took it up to 80-100km/h.... Really need to organise some electric power steering as its very difficult to do a handbrake 180 as i cant wind the lock on fast enough without p/s

Booked in for tune on the 6th, have a 50l drum of shell 103 wr sitting there ready to take down.

Intending on having it tuned for a certain boost on 98, with the option of cranking whatever sean thinks is safe for the turbo +antilag on the 103...

Thinking ill only get 26psi out of the 98 tune, but should be able to touch 32ish on the 103. Basically what simmilar builds have done over east.

Ok had a few gremlins to fix after the dyno

Main ones were

Chronic Exhuast leaks through my manifold - Have since gotten in touch with Kyle at 6boost, i sent him my manifold and he has fabbed me up a twinscroll manifold with his quality touch. That is due to arrive tomorrow.

Damaged waste gate diaphrams - Bought 2 new diaphrams from ATP in the states. Paid 180 for both delivered, after MTQ wanted to charge me 180 each + freight. Thanks but no thanks :)

Leaking driveshaft seal - Replace with toyota item

Bought another Sabelt harness, now have a 6 point driver and a 4 point passenger dated till 2014

Change front BMC from 3/4 bore to 5/8 bore to improve pedal feel.

Will be finishing these items off over the weekend and shall be putting some km's on it ready for a dyno visit within the next couple of weeks. Getting closer to the track!

6 boost manifold has made a big difference, trial fitted gates. Just waiting on diaphrams to come in from the states on monday and ill rebuild them and make the runners.

Just got a few little things more to do.

Did the rear cv boot today, stupid design ive created means i had to drop the lower control arms and subframe to get the farken driveshaft out.

Did a front driveshaft seal, however it still weeps, the toyota shafts run a strange oring on the shaft. I think this may still be an issue, need to re do that.

Thank fark it only takes 5 mins to drop front shafts out

Cheers for the comments boys, Jordan, did you get the email i sent you regarding a spec list a while back?

No, idea is not for tuned length, look at teh sides of the manifold, 1 and 4 go to one side of the turbo and 2 and 3 go to the other, somewhere one has to cross over. Thats the idea of a twinscroll/split pulse and thats how you get the torque

Went on the dyno today

All was good untill i left the wastegate feed lines off, had a rapid increase in boost and power. Caused clutch to give way, basically at about the 350whp mark.

Left it at 320, still awesome to drive

Hmm alot has happened

My clutch dramas were actually caused by my clutch master cylinder not coming over its relief hole, however the damage was done. Give it a few hard runs from 2nd to 3rd and it will start to slip. So a few new things are going in.

Changing to one of my spare blocks, without o-rings as i believe they are a waste of time, and are causing me more problems than they are worth at the moment. Flying in new pistons and rods to go into new block, selling off currrent block.

Changing to one of my spare heads, this one is fully ported and im going to cut oversize valves into it and flowbench the head over standard to see how much i actually gain.
Going to go to solid lifters and spin the engine a bit faster, currently have redline at 7500, will prob lift that to 8200 or so.

PAR engineeering in the east, is making me a button style flywheel to suit the new Tilton OT2 twin plate clutch

Will put it all back together, and be ready to go and tuned for the first events of next year i think, as its not going to make it back on the road.

More setbacks, but that is to be expected when im trying to make a 1100kg car produce 500hp at the engine, reliably.

joshg123

Thought id update,

Progress has been slow, the things im buying at the moment soak the cash. Been saving over the last couple of months so i can go full steam at end of jan.

Driveline

Have committed to a PAR dogbox, 1-4 straight cut with synchro 5th for road use and transport style driving.

Found a good deal at HRPworld.com for the tilton, basically got it for half the price the AUS distributors wanted for it, same product.

Flywheel is still being manufactured by PAR.

Fuelling

Cut a big hole in the back to house a fuel cell, Incorperating a surge tank section and adding or upgrading the fuel pump in order to use E85 fuel. Will prob stick with 2 and run 2 -6 teflon lines down the length of the car.

Need to locate some affordable 1000cc injectors to feed the motor.

Engine

Have the old and new head down at harris, looking at the porting and combustion chamber work in comparison to a relativly stock head looks like we will have some good gains with this head. Will be putting them side by side on the flowbench in the coming weeks to see the gains.

JE pistons, and Supertech oversize valves have arrived. Have Eagle rods here too but deciding weather to ditch them for some Spool rods or use them.

Interior

Have pulled every mm of wire out the car ready for a bare essentials rewire, purchased a new loom for the SM4

Pulled the factory dash out, have completed a plug that incorperates a switch panel and rise for the racepak iq3 dash display. Attempting this dash in carbon/kevlar. See how we go.

So yeh, all things going forward atm, just need the bank account to recover a bit and look at getting it on the road for this seasons time attack. Ive ironed out all the bugs in the first build so i know what to and what not to do this time around.

Still have goals at 420whp/1080ish kg

After catching up somewhat with the stupid workload at work, i can now get back on this project. In the meantime ive been saving some cash.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/joshg123/03232010361.jpg

Tilton OTII clutch on custom PAR flywheel as per previous posts.

Have paid for the dogbox, straight 1-4 dog engagement with straight final drive and billet selector forks.

Tossing up between AIM MXL and Racepak IQ3 dash display atm, both have their +'s and -'s but almost very equal dash's

Have nearly finished the plug for the carbon dashboard.

Making the fuel cell next week with 1x bosch 040 lift and 2x bosch 044 pressure pumps

See how we go!

joshg123
03-06-2010, 08:46 PM
More bits arrived, can actually start to build engine now. Machining and balancing is done, prepping engine bay this weekend and moulding plug for carbon dash.... Wiring to come then put it back in.

Still waiting on dogbox from PAR, selector forks holding the process up.

Well after a stint in europe and some more cash saving i can now get back on the project,

A few changes, sold my old cusco roll cage and am getting a proper cams one welded in. Wanting to get it right this time as teh old cage was a bit of a shamozzle. Trying to step it up to the next level so currently getting some plans from a dude in the US so i can make a new rear subframe with lowered roll centre, this means i can get my shocks shortened and drop the car to about a 80mm ride height and now that my factory fuel tank is goneski for a small fuel cell i can put a big panel of carbon and have the floor completley flat from front to rear of car. The front roll centre is a bit trickyer as i have to remake the front LCA's with provision for the front sway bar and somehow have no binding.... a challenge it seems.

Purchased some AP 6 pots after long debate, luckily they bolt onto my existing dogbones with minimal mods, need to change offset of rotor bells by 6mm and then they will be sweet, also gotta machine 3mm off dogbones to make calipers sit closer to axle as they just touch the wheels now.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/joshg123/37148_10150278321900076_629510075_15294322_1692293 _n.jpg

Bought some CRkai's off a forum member, 17x9 which is a good fit for the front but a bit mexican on rear.... was able to do the 4 to 5 stud conversion with minimal fuss.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/joshg123/apbrakes.jpg

Engine and box are on hold untill cage and suspension is finished, otherwise too much on the mind.

Sold my Eagle (yuck) conrods, purchasing some PAR engineering heavy duty rods that have seen upto 500hp at the engine with no issues.

Waiting for bank balance to recover a little then will probably invest in a Borgwarner s259 billet turbo to try and get the 440whp - 450whp that i want.

I wonder if it will ever run, rhys kindly shouted out at a cruise the other night that he has only ever seen the car on the dyno, i suppose i better get a move on!

Cheers for looking, any suspension geometry experts feel free to pipe up! need to ask a few questions about how far i go with this roll centre

Last i checked Matt you owe me a round of nandos....

Marc - Yeah on the web you can get the tilton factsheets with the measurements to drill your flywheel too. I was in a position that i just handed my factsheet to PAR, told them how i wanted it made and they did the rest. However its something you need someone good to do, because twinplates hate missalignment with solid plates, a bloke i know over east who stripped his splines from the discs within 1000km by being 15thou out. (0.35ishmm).

Ill check my emails now, thanks Hayden

Set up the ride height today with some spare coilovers without springs,

I cut the lip off a spare front fender to give extra guard clearance, think ill buy some +30mm bolt on s13 style fender flares and use those to get some extra ride height. My thinking is, if i can have this ride height and have about a inch of travel ill still have good roll centre, any lower im going to run into issues not just with returning roll centre but if i run a 255 wide tyre ill be hitting the inner guards, they are alot harder to modify than the outer sheetmetal.

So i need to find someone (im thinking murray coote) to modify my proflex to get my correct ride height, if thats not possible i will use the coilovers fitted, purchase some new springs all round and shock inserts to suit. Both will be fairly simmilar cost wise.

Here you can see my dillema in getting wide wheels/tyres on a little bitch car

Oh and i took the roll cage out in anticipation of a new one in the coming weeks

Josh has started again on this and has some crack pipe ideas. He got a cage welded in and had also gotten a bit happy with the angle grinder on the front guards lol apparently it has to be super super low.

joshg123
11-04-2011, 06:40 PM
Yeah back on the project but nothing super worthy of updating the thread yet, in short a few things have taken place. Alot we are still working on. The build is still directed in the time attack format, however im focussing on chassis setup and handling moreso, however the car will have a drivetrain upgrade.

Ditched BP(1.8) and purchased FE3N (2.0) and stroker F2T crank, to make a 2.3L with a 040 overbore - Working on solid lifters, billet cams and crank solutions to make big power. Reason?, FE series engines are well known for excellent cylinder head design, with aftermarket internals its not unheard of to make 500-600hp on a stock crank and bore.

Purchased 2AZ powered rav4 gearbox, which has a slimmer transfer case design to suit the wider FE3 block. This works with the GT4 Dog gearset and straight cut final drive. A machinist in the east and I, are working on mating the drive collars between the two series of gearboxs. All mounts, shifters, clutch, shafts and ratios stay the same. I will shim the rear lsd, and we have a possibility of adding a front LSD and locked centre diff. Which will hurt with understeer but will stop the inside front picking up and spinning.

Fetish/Richard hooked me up with a baller roll cage, we currently have approximatly 20M of barwork in the car, with a few more bars to come to strengthen the front strut tower area.

I have purchased new front lower control arms, these will be rod ended rather than bushed, and will give me the ability of altering my static roll centre due to massive ride height change. I expect these to be here in 4 weeks

Im currently in the process of modifying front and rear guards to accept much lower ride height and 235/45/17 tyres all round, ive got the fronts close but not perfect and the rears will follow in the coming weeks.

Stay tuned for more in the next 6 weeks or so as i start to get the ride height down, the seat/steering/dash display/fuel cell mounted.

Oh and i also built a new workshop at home so i can piece all this together, trying to do this at my mainstream workshop is just too hard.
