Marking threads read

When I am surfing at work, if I am inactive for about half hour or more (read called away from my desk), I come back and everything is marked as read.

Is there any way to turn this off so that threads are only marked read if I actually have entered the thread, or if I click mark all threads/forums as read??

Or so it doesn't do it at all unless you have either read it, or clicked to mark them read.

Also, is there any way to make the date read Date-Month-Year, not Month-Date-Year??
