Ok as some of you know I smashed an open diff a few weeks ago. I have since replaced it with another open diff.

My question is, with Motorvation coming up, is it possible to weld shut the broken diff? I'm not 100% sure what is required to weld a diff....

Here are pics of the insides of the broken diff...

W.A diff center sell mini spools for about $180, not sure if they have them for Soarer. Might pay to give them a call....

You should be able to weld that up. AFAIk as long as the crown and pinon are not damaged the rest can be welded together. Your Crown wheel looks ok to me but i can only see 1/4 of it and its fuzzy :)

I rekon your right man... just looked like a few ****ed teeth on the spider gears.
Ring a few diff shops.... stress to them you will only be using this diff off the road at low speed and you aknowledge liability for using it in the car.

weld it your self, or pay some one to do it

go to any engineering shop and they should be able to do it

Rotomotion will do it, TIG is the welder of choice

Cheers guys.

A locked diff is more useful than a ****ed diff.

when ive done a coupla rota/hilux diffs over the years. id use stainless rods and cut a small steel plate to drop in the centre of spider gears and weld away and between the gears. old school CIG locka now BOC locka

The diff in my car was welded in Japan, apart from sounding like complete **** when turning 90 degree corners or tighter turns it's good. Carparks are bombed. A mate with his own 33 drove it & said around corners the car felt a lot more stable than his with the factory lsd. It's just with that & my tough track spec suspension they don't combine for a comfy ride so I'll be replacing it once I'm ready for it. And yes they are good for what you're needing Paul ;)
