Butters, if you're interested you may aswell go; they're not going to give 2 fvcks whether you're there or not because of your reasons - you're only disadvantaging yourself!

The WA Govt will be making all their money on teams and spectators spending money on food, accommodation and generally buying stuff - thats the way they see it!

Im going to park around East Perth and ride my bike around I think; best spectator spot is the Sth Perth foreshore; I reckon parking is gonna be a b1tch!

What happens if a plane crashes going that fast so close to all the spectators? Bulk fatalities hahaha

Would make for good news though hahaha

**** I forgot this is what is replacing the rally...

Now I'm conflicted, I want to see it, but I'd hate to see the decision to cancel the rally justified by a big return for the Air Race...

Saying that, accidents happen blah blah blah.

I'm trying to decide what you will actually be able to see from the foreshore as fas as action is concerned, and if it will be worth all the hassles of seeing it "live" (ie parking, crowds, the inevitable poor organisation that is bound to plague a virgin event, hell, south perth council cant even coordinate the skyshow properly after 20 years) as compared to just watching the foxtel coverage and doing something else with my sunday.

I'm also in the Butters camp of being against it in principal because of Rally Aus.

Red Bull Air Race organisers have nothing to do with Rally Australia, i.e. they are here to put on a show for us, not the WA Government....dont "penalise" them just because your bitter about Rally Aus.

The less people that attend, the more its going to ruin it for us when we want to see future events here in Perth. Spectator response is a huge part of deciding the future of any event.

In this case Joe, "spectator response" will have very little influence on what the Govt has clearly demonstrated is it's bottom line when deciding what events it will bring to WA - dollars raised/profits made. This was the reasoning offered for dumping the Rally.

In the instance of RBAR, the dollars raised will be primarily sponsor/commercially based. Spectator response (and by interpretation what the people actually want to see) matters very little.

If you wish to argue otherwise, and suggest that the RBAR will appeal to a wider demographic than the Rally by being held on the river etc, tell me how exactly spectator response will be measured considering they wont be charging entry etc??

I wish the government would give up on "how much money can we make right NOW on this event", and start considering "how much money will this exposure help us make in the future".

If they have the choice to hold a major international event and they get all antsy because they are only making a couple of million above break even (which isnt enough for them), then there is something wrong with them.

See, what they dont realise is, they arent reaping the benefits now.... it will be future benefits for any other events they hold.

This is how it works. Events such as the RBAR creates good will, in the minds of different "publics".

These publics include

a) The population of WA
b) Prospective tourist population from everywhere outside WA
c) Event organisers from around Australia
d) Event organisers from around the world

After these publics have seen that the WA Govt. has put on an international event such as the air race, people will be more willing to consider Perth as a "supplier of choice" for different international and national events.

When the next "international" event rolls around, and it happens to need the convention centre or the WACA or something, and people have to pay $30 each for entry, the govt will make LOTS of money, and the spectators woh responded last time will line up to pay their $30, because of their positive perception of past events held here in Perth. This is where "spectator response" is important ;)

It takes a while to build that good will, and it doesnt happen by canning an event because its not made enough money!!

IMHO, Perth should start using its natural resources, such as the river, to hold other events. Power boat racing, or jet ski racing, or world wakeboarding championships, or something else awesome on the river...if they keep doing stuff like that, they'll build an image of a city that hold extreme sports events, and it'll just keep snowballing. We'll eventually get more than extreme sports, we'll get all sorts of events being held here, because of the support of the WA Govt and the population of WA!

Its like an investment, cant make all the money now, needs to build up over time. They arent exactly LOSING any money, so maybe they should stop complaining, and use the RBAR as a spring board into a string of future events!!

Joe
16-11-2006, 11:21 PM
How exactly would they charge you ?

"oh noes dont look in the air!"

You seen the City of South Perth parking inspectors before?

Yeah, well...they are the City of South Perth "looking" inspectors now. Look in the air, and before you even realise, you'll have a ticket stuck behind your ear

Im going for sure, this is the first time this race has been in the southern Hemisphere. If we even get a quarter of the interest it does in any other part of the world it will benefit our tourism (1000,000 spectators in Budapest).

People have been flying from all over Australia for the last 2 weeks to come and watch this,Go look at Jandakot airport and see how many planes are there at the moment.

Totally agree with everything you said.

Now please explain why, after having done ALL the aformentioned hard work creating a local and international positive perception, they decided to dump the Rally? It meets all of your criteria, including making use of WA's unique natural resources. That is my MAIN point.

My next point is that in this instance, neither the Govt nor the sponsors in reality are really going to care whether 100 people or 100 000 people flock to the forshore to view the RBAR. Why?? Because the majority of the money the event/sponsors make is going to come from the TV rights etc - as long as Perth looks good on TV, with the river, bridges etc, then thats all they need. And the Govt makes all of its money from the sponsors and the event - spectator response clearly offers minimal return, or they would be doing more to try and charge the public to view it. Local councils such as South Perth will get in on the act by slugging parking fines on as many people as they can - I know for a fact a number of the councils including South Perth and Subiaco "lend/borrow" rangers/parking inspectors to/from each other for different events such as the football, royal show etc; but the state govt essentially gets very little return from the WA public as such.

I spose therein lies the appeal of the RBAR to the Govt - its easy money for relatively little effort/input.

Given the issues Perth has with noise restrictions/complaints (see the Claremont speedway, Subiaco oval, Burswood Dome, Becks Verandah during the Perth International Arts Festival, and the disappearance of a number of live music venues for prime examples) I can see this being a major threat to the continuation of the RBAR series in Perth. Was having that same thought myself as I have listened to them all morning - every old granny will be currently writing their letter to the editor/local MP as we speak.

i just got back from the river watchign the practice. It is really good seeing it live and up close.. for about 10 mins, then after every single guy does the same thing it does get tiresome, plus with the music blaring the noise of the planes and choppers, not to mention the fly-bys by the air force (about 10 times louder than the RBAR planes) i can see alot of complaints coming in. IMHO the rally was much more exciting as a spectator and just getting ot the event is going to be a pain in the ass judging by the traffic and lack of parking that i saw today in south perth.

Lonewolf
18-11-2006, 09:42 AM
yeah, it will turn into that for spectators, you will find most of the people will be pissed and not even watching....
i dont really find it interesting on tv (with commentary and in cabin shots etc), so it would be even more boring in person.

South perth govt is doubling parking fines for the day by the way...
have a look on riverside drive side, and see how many signs you can see with Perth on them, every single sign.
As mentioned, its not about bringing the event here for the people of perth, its about brining in tourism and sponsor revenue.

Oh man how packed was that! I am going to have to change plans for it next year though, either stake out a decent spot and drink lots or geta hotel room or something with a view and drink lots. Much drinking must be involved. I was sober as err something that's really sober today and although I enjoyed the atmosphere it actually got a little boring, it all looked the same for a lot. It seemed the big screen gave a better perspective than watching it live.
But far out how many people!!!! Oh and I was driving along the Narrows and the jet came right over head, awesome! Still doesn't beat a Top Fuel launch from 20 feet away but hey I'll take it on a Sunday. :)
